This is pretty interesting, follow the link and watch the motion of the blue lines, then turn on the occluders..

Technically the mechanism at work here is known as "motion binding". When the edges of the diamond are covered by occluders with the same colour as the background (here, white) there is no information on the vertices of the square. Now the ends of the line become a property of the line and there is insufficient information to detect the circular movement.
The reappearance of the diamond (with occluders invisible) on eccentric viewing is probably caused by blurring the distracting line ends.Motion Binding illusion

No exceptions

Noexceptions
Leaving aside the obvious contradiction of strategy (laptop users are more likely to buy books and less likely to steal stuff, so why not let them in the store and offer them a mesh bag to carry about), this sign highlights one of the silliest (and common) policy rules: no exceptions.

No exceptions? Really?

If I gave you a million dollars could you make an exception?

And on top of the unreality of the idea, consider the message it sends to the consumer. "We're so busy and so centralized and so hierarchical that you shouldn't even bother to discuss this with our staff." Or, the short version, "go away."

Why not try a sign that says,

WELCOME!
To keep costs down, we require anyone carrying a bag bigger than this square to check it. Our check area is run by Ralph, who is kind and honest, but I hope you can understand that we can't be responsible for any items you might want to check. If this is a problem for you, consider asking for one of our mesh bags, which can safely tote your laptop or camera. Thanks for shopping at the Strand... we're really glad you're here.

If making a sign gets you all stressed out, let someone else do it for you.

Will Gurley)

Central St. Martins College of Art and Design

The Bourne Ultimatum Google Tie-in

The movie The Bourne Ultimatum will be partnering with Google for promotion. Starring Matt Damon, this will be the third installment of the spy thriller after The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy. The movie site – turn down your speakers if you don’t want sound – reads (case adjusted):

The Ultimate Search For Bourne on Google
Starts This summer

Not sure what this will be about – maybe a game including custom Google Maps where Google is hiding stuff, similar to their Xmas scavenger hunt? NateDawg writes he “noticed a nice little Google Maps logo at the bottom left hand side.”

Previous Google movie collaborations included The Da Vinci Code as well as The Break-Up, and they were all tying into Google products (like Google Video, or the Google Personalized Homepage), so that both Google and the movie got some advertising.

[Thanks NateDawg.]

Tellme Networks announced at the Web 2.0 Expo today that it will be adding three new ways to access its information service that was launched back in January. The service functions similar to to 411, but users can request information through voice, SMS, or Mobile Web. The announcement comes just a week after Google announced its free 411 service, Goog-411.

To use the service through voice, simply call 1.800.555.TELL and say “Business Search” to find a business listing or search for a particular category, such as “flower shops,” from any phone.SMS and Mobile Web are equally easy. Sending a text message to TELLM with the details of the business you’re looking for. The service will respond with detail information that includes a link to a map. And if you don’t want to deplete your SMS allotment, a quick visit to www.tellme.com should produce similar results.

TechCrunch recently reported that Microsoft had acquired Tellme Networks, Inc. Tellme claims responsibility for answering nearly 80-percent of the automated 411 calls in the States. The acquisition goes into effect on April 30.

Hooray for Earth Day! People gather to recycle cans before turning around in their SUV to go home. This above photo was a message from the World Wildlife Foundation to China. It reads, "Drive one day less and look how much carbon dioxide you'll keep out of the air we breathe." We think it looks neat and makes its point well.

Other ED coverage impressions by category...

gcyclePicture%203.pngUseful
G4 teams up with Earth 911 to provide a gadget recycling search engine called Gcycle. You enter your zipcode and the electronic you want to recycle. They tell you where to go.

Clever

LAPTOP instructs us on how to make a keyboard into a wallet, and gives us four other ideas to find new uses for old gadgets that aren't bad at all.

Provocative
WorldChanging takes a stance against Earth Day.

The biggest problem with Earth Day is that it has become a ritual of sympathy for the idea of environmental sanity. Small steps, we're told, ignoring the fact that most of the steps most frequently promoted (returning your bottles, bringing your own bag, turning off the water while you brush your teeth) are of such minor impact (compared to our ecological footprints) that they are essentially meaningless without larger, systemic action as well. The strategy of recycling as a gateway drug -- get them hooked on it and we can move them on to harder stuff -- has failed miserably.

Steadfast

Treehugger responds...
We all know that changing a lightbulb is meaningless if we are building coal fired power plants like mad. The issues at stake will be dealt with at the government level, not in our chandelier... [but] small steps lead to education and awareness and that leads to votes and votes lead to change.
Is it possible that we agree with both sides?
